What becomes possible when women have space to be heard, opportunities to receive care, and a community with which to share what they know?
The Listening Effect is a developing community wellness initiative centered on improving access to body-based care, supportive listening, practical education, and meaningful connection for Black, Indigenous, and other women of color.
We recognize that wellness is shaped by more than individual choices. Cost, access to information, availability of trusted practitioners, representation, and opportunities for connection can all influence whether someone receives the care and support they need.
Our vision is to create welcoming, accessible opportunities for women to receive support, learn new ways to care for themselves, share their knowledge, and reconnect with themselves and their communities.
Massage therapy and other complementary and integrative health approaches are not equally accessed by everyone. Research has identified differences in service utilization, financial and practical barriers, and continuing gaps in representation across parts of the complementary health workforce.
The Listening Effect seeks to respond by listening to women's experiences, learning directly from the communities we hope to serve, and developing programs that address the needs women identify.
We believe listening should be more than a conversation. It should help shape how support is offered, how resources are shared, and how communities care for one another.
Community Connection & Belonging
Listening circles, facilitated conversations, and reflective gatherings create opportunities for women to share experiences, be heard without judgment, and build meaningful relationships.
Through Sister Circles, Truth Circles, and community conversations, we aim to reduce isolation and learn what support women want and need.
Equitable Access to Body-Based Care
We are working toward greater access to massage therapy, craniosacral therapy, Reiki, and other appropriate wellness services.
Through a combination of earned income, sliding-scale appointments, sponsored sessions, and community partnerships, we aim to reduce financial barriers and connect women with appropriate care.
Education, Skills & Opportunity
Knowledge is a resource that grows when it is shared.
This program will create opportunities for practical self-care education, peer-led learning, wellness workshops, skill-sharing, and exploration of complementary health career pathways.
Our goal is to help women build confidence, access useful information, learn from one another, and discover opportunities for continued growth.
Nature, Reflection & Renewal
Time for reflection, restorative experiences, and connection with nature can offer a welcome pause from everyday demands.
Through guided nature gatherings, day retreats, and community experiences, we aim to create space for women to reconnect with themselves, cultivate supportive relationships, and carry meaningful practices into daily life.
The Listening Effect is being developed with attention to research on disparities in massage therapy and complementary and integrative health access.
We also want to hear directly from women.
A community needs assessment will explore which services women use, what barriers they experience, what would make care more accessible, and what educational and career opportunities they would like to see.
Our intention is to let evidence and lived experience inform program development, measure what we do, and continually improve how we serve.
We envision a model that combines earned income, sliding-scale services, sponsored appointments, and partnerships to expand access.
Some activities may be offered at a fee, while others may be subsidized or free when funding allows. We will work toward transparent access policies that respect both participants' needs and the resources required to sustain the programs.
The "Listening Effect" is in development, and we welcome connections with women, community members, wellness practitioners, educators, potential partners, and supporters who share this vision.
You can help by sharing your experiences, participating in our community survey when it becomes available, exploring partnership opportunities, or supporting efforts to make wellness more accessible.
Listening is a healing practice. Together, we can explore what becomes possible when more women have access to care, connection, knowledge, and community.
The Listening Effect is a developing initiative. Program availability, scheduling, and sponsored services will depend on implementation, partnerships, and funding.
